U. S. Visitors to Canada

Description:
There have been many discussions on what documents an American citizen needs to visit Canada. The point really is, what are the documents that the U.S. requires for it's citizens to return home?

Until June 2009: American Citizens travelling by land to Canada will need proof of citizenship-preferably a valid passport BUT a birth certificate and photo ID such as driver's license are acceptable. A driver's license on it's own only proves you live somewhere and not that you are a citizen.

January 8 2007 : Air travellers returning to the U.S. will require a passport.
